According to a US Government report, 140,000 jobs were lost in the month of December. According to an analysis from the National Women’s Law Center, ALL of these jobs belonged to women. Yes, you read that right: ALL of them. So, as we find ourselves still in the midst of this incredible challenge of a pandemic, women continue to be hit the hardest, especially women of color. When your mission is all about economic empowerment for women, I’m sure you can imagine how hopeless we feel at times. We haven’t given up hope, however, and we won’t. Even though it was a reduction from 2019, we managed to assist nearly 300 women in 2020 via our core suiting program and/or one of our job readiness programs. Hundreds more women took advantage of one or more of the services offered via our Virtual Career Center. Aligned with our mission is our commitment to helping to eradicate injustice and inequality in our community. During February, we celebrate Black History Month, a federally recognized celebration of the numerous contributions African Americans have made to this country and a time to reflect on the continued struggle for racial justice. The theme of Black History Month 2021 is “The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity.” This theme was chosen by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
